About the collaboration

On March 4, 2019, EURECOM, France Brevets, IMT, and Qualcomm announced a joint agreement for the funding of research for new technologies involving the 5G-NR standard. Qualcomm has provided funding to support wireless communications research by EURECOM and its partner organization IMT, while France Brevets provided support in the area of intellectual property strategy. This type of collaboration is a new way of working together to develop digital and sustainability transformation; one that is empowered by investments in technology, creativity, innovation, and invention. It also recognizes that strong intellectual property protection and an open standardization and licensing system are necessary to continue the drive in Europe's innovation economy, especially as 5G-NR permeates throughout adjacent industries such as automotive, healthcare, education, and retail.

Through its basic research activities, EURECOM has commenced participation in 3GPP standardization on Coverage Enhancement, particularly in uplink control channel signaling. EURECOM plans to make contributions in this area and beyond in the context of Release 17.

"EURECOM is thrilled to have been able to commence participation in contributions to 3GPP Release 17 study items in 2020 based on our collaboration with Qualcomm, France Brevets and IMT. It was truly an eye-opening experience which will surely lead to bigger and better things in the months and years to come." said Prof. Raymond Knopp, EURECOM and President, OpenAirInterface Software Alliance.

"We are extremely pleased at EURECOM to continue this important collaboration with a 3GPP leader such as Qualcomm. We hope this partnership will generate important technology and standardization patents and will open the door to further work together in the area of communication systems," said Ulrich Finger, Director at EURECOM.

"The Communication Systems Department of EURECOM prides itself on its several research partnerships with leading industry players in 5G+ and 6G wireless R&D. The agreement with Qualcomm offers great value as it allows for our team to push concepts into standardization, which is quite unique in the world of academic research," added Prof. David Gesbert, Head of the Communication Systems Department at EURECOM.

"As a leading player in mobile telecommunications and 5G-XG ecosystem, IMT is proud of this close collaboration with EURECOM, France Brevets, and Qualcomm, which strengthens French research competencies in the field," said Francis Jutand, Deputy Executive Director, Institut Mines-Telecom. "This conference clearly highlights the innovative results of this multilateral partnership and will provide important insights into the latest advances on R&D achievements and 5G technologies and standardization."

"This partnership with EURECOM, IMT and Qualcomm confirms France Brevets' ability to attract foreign investments in France. 5G is now reality, and Qualcomm, one of the key 5G players and one of the most innovative companies in the world, has decided to further develop this technology in France. This speaks for the quality of France's R&D and France's attractiveness in Europe for the development of new technologies" said Didier Patry, CEO, France Brevets.

"The topic of this event has never been more relevant," said Enrico Salvatori, SVP & President Europe/MEA, Qualcomm Europe, Inc. "At the beginning of the year we announced our plan to open a new 5G R&D center in France to work on the future evolution of 5G and beyond. We also have a strong organizational concentration on automotive in the region, spanning engineering, service, product marketing and go to market. Europe is an epicenter for technology R&D leadership and we are incredibly proud to be part of it."

"I want to congratulate our partners EURECOM, France Brevets, and IMT for the impressive results they have achieved, based on the research project," said Alex Rogers, EVP of Qualcomm Incorporated and President, Qualcomm Technology Licensing. "As the 5G technology leader, Qualcomm is proud to enable the ecosystem and drive digital transformation across industries from automotive to manufacturing and beyond. We believe such collaborations allow a virtuous circle of development for foundational technologies with a view at building Europe's open strategic autonomy."
