Catania rail bypass works assigned
21 June 2023
A significant project to improve the railway connection at Catania rail bypass and ensure efficient transportation in Sicily.

The temporary joint venture, led by the Eteria Consortium, has been awarded the contract by RFI for the design and undergrounding works of the railway line between Catania Acquicella and Bicocca in the Catania bypass. The contract is valued at over €370 million, with Salcef Group's share amounting to approximately €33 million.

As part of the new Palermo - Catania - Messina railway connection, The project involves the burial of a railway section that interferes with the extension of Catania-Fontanarossa airport's runway. This will be achieved through the construction of a cut-and-cover tunnel and railway cuttings spanning approximately 3 kilometers. The project also includes modifying the Catania-Siracusa connection route, creating a new branch for direct connections between Siracusa and Palermo, and constructing the new Bicocca station, which will also house a new integrated freight terminal. Additionally, the Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa stop will be transformed into a station with the addition of a third track.

With its extensive experience in the railway infrastructure sector, the Salcef Group will be responsible for all railway track works, and electrification and signalling activities in the Catania Rail Junction enhancement project. The Group's expertise and professionalism ensure the implementation of advanced technological solutions and the upgrading of infrastructure for enhanced efficiency and safety of the railway system.

This new infrastructure will play a crucial role in mobility in Catania and Sicily. It is not only essential for completing the airport's new runway but also for enhancing the railway connection with Catania Fontanarossa Airport through the expansion of Aeroporto Catania Fontanarossa station, modernization of the Bicocca facility (Sicily's main freight terminal), and adaptation of the railway section to meet European standards.
