* Energy, tech shares lead declines

March 11 (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index came off its 2-year highs on Monday, pulled down by energy and technology shares, as investors indulged in profit-taking ahead of a key inflation report from the United States due later in the week.

At 10:17 a.m. ET (14:17 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was down 94.31 points, or 0.43%, at 21,643.22.

Rate-sensitive technology stocks weighed on the index with a 1.2% decline, tracking losses in the tech-heavy Nasdaq in the U.S.

Crypto miner Bitfarms slipped 9.2% to over a month low after it announced an at-the-market equity offering worth $375 million.

Energy shares lost 0.9% on slipping oil prices as persistent global geopolitical concerns collided with softening demand concerns in China.

"A large amount of profit taking was coming in on Friday where a number of markets hit all-time highs, and we're seeing a follow through on that today," said Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at SIA Wealth Management.

On the bright side, the materials sector which houses Canadian miners rose 0.2% after gold and copper prices steadied.

The sector is poised to extend its rally to an eighth session and log its longest winning streak since April 2022 if gains hold.

On the data front, a monthly reading of consumer prices (CPI) in the U.S. is due on Tuesday, that will provide some more insight into the Federal Reserve's thinking on rate cuts.

"It would take a substantial change in CPI for people to change their minds (on the timing of interest rate cuts)," Cieszynski added.

The report follows a mixed reading of non-farm payrolls data last week, which showed some signs of softening in the labor market and kept bets of an interest rate cut from the U.S. Fed in June intact.

In corporate updates, shares of Silvercrest Metals advanced 15.4% to the top of the TSX, after the non-gold precious metals miner announced its fourth-quarter results. (Reporting by Purvi Agarwal in Bengaluru; Editing by Vijay Kishore)
