DENVER (AP) _ SM Energy Co. (SM) on Wednesday reported a loss of $165.2 million in its fourth quarter.

The Denver-based company said it had a loss of $1.44 per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 2 cents per share.

The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 7 cents per share.

The independent oil and gas company posted revenue of $320.3 million in the period, which also did not meet Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $340.4 million.

For the year, the company reported that its loss widened to $764.6 million, or $6.72 per share. Revenue was reported as $1.13 billion.

SM Energy shares have more than doubled since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $14.06, an increase of 61% in the last 12 months.
