SRV to expand Myllypuro Health and Well-being Centre - new building implemented as a cooperative project management contract will serve as a hub for East Helsinki

SRV and the City of Helsinki have signed an agreement on an extension to Myllypuro Health and Well-being Centre. The agreement will be executed as a cooperative project management contract with a total value to SRV of approximately EUR 57 million. This order will be recognised in the order backlog in May.

The project involves extending the health and well-being centre built in Myllypuro in 2012. In the future, all the health and well-being centre services for East Helsinki will be centralised in two locations: Vuosaari and Myllypuro. When the extension is completed, the Myllypuro site will accommodate the health and well-being centre services and laboratory and imaging services for the Myllypuro, Kontula and Kivikko districts. It will also include café and restaurant spaces.

Seamless cooperation in a cooperative project management contract

The project will start in the spring with a year-long development phase, after which the construction is expected to begin in spring 2025. The organization built around a cooperative project management contract aims for seamless cooperation between the different parties of the project. All parties participate in the development phase of the project, and during it the project is developed to meet the client's goals. The joint project organization ensures that the project is managed towards common goals with common rules. The methods of operation focus on open information flow and interaction between different parties at all levels of the project. The personnel and clients were involved in the project design and engineering phase. During the development phase, SRV will work with the users of the premises to identify design and engineering solutions compatible with the project's lifecycle targets and the site's specific characteristics.

A new five-storey section with approximately 14,000 gross square metres of floor area will be built over the metro line to the north of the old section of the health centre. The ground floor will also contain an entrance to the metro station and a ticket hall. In addition, the existing parking garage will be expanded under the new section. The health centre's existing activities can continue in their present premises almost as normal throughout construction. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2027 and the extension will be commissioned in 2028.

"The new premises of the health and well-being centre will be built in a central location in Myllypuro. In addition to high-quality construction, it is important that the health and well-being centre, subway station, Liikuntamylly and other nearby neighbours can continue to operate as smoothly as possible during construction as well. SRV has expertise in the development and implementation of projects in demanding locations. In the project group, we are convinced that the project can be implemented with high quality, also considering the needs of the stakeholders and the functions", says Jean Toljander, project director from the City of Helsinki's Urban Environment division.

Extension to be built in a challenging environment

"SRV has robust experience in hospital construction, and our top professionals will work on this project. The extension will be built in the immediate vicinity of the health and well-being centre, which will remain in use. Working above the metro track will present a further unique challenge. SRV's robust experience in infrastructure construction is utilized in the demanding work phases carried out on top of the metro line. We will work safely and with special care, considering the health care centre's operations. Furthermore, we will not disrupt metro traffic," says Mira Alatalo, Business Unit Director at SRV.

The project will be executed in two phases: The first phase will be the complete construction of the extension, and the second phase will be the construction of the main lobby, walkways and alterations to the premises in the old section. This phasing will minimise the need to move people and functions within the building and disrupt the health and well-being centre's operations.

Over the years, SRV has implemented several important health and medical buildings, such as the Bridge Hospital, completed for HUS in 2022; the New Children's Hospital and the Kalasatama Health and Well-being Centre, completed in 2018; Central Finland Central Hospital Nova in 2021; and TAYS Front Yard in Tampere in 2019. SRV is currently executing the large Laakso Joint Hospital project in Helsinki and a new building at Jorvi Hospital in Espoo.

Focus on energy efficiency and lifecycle wisdom

The design, engineering and material selections for Myllypuro Health and Well-being Centre contribute to the Carbon-Neutral Helsinki goals, which aim for energy-efficient, life-cycle-sustainable and resource-wise construction. The premises will be designed for flexible operations and adaptation, enabling various types of service activities in the future social welfare and healthcare centre.

The design and engineering solutions focus on energy efficiency and local renewable energy production with heat pumps and solar panels. Air/water heat pumps will be the primary forms of heating in the building. It covers a significant part of the entire property's energy needs.
