Efforts by Stantec's Sustainability Committee in Winnipeg to make Stantec a Manitoba leader in sustainability were recognized today with a Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Award.

The initiatives implemented by the 21-person committee and local leadership at Stantec's new downtown office garnered them the title of Champions of Sustainability at the awards.

'When we brought our four Winnipeg offices together in one downtown location, we wanted to take the opportunity to reexamine how we operate, and look at where we can be a more sustainable member of the business community,' says Eric Wiens, Stantec's vice president for Manitoba. 'Our Sustainability Committee found creative and practical ways to substantially reduce our environmental footprint, while providing a variety of new amenities to our people.'

Sustainability programs available to Stantec employees in Winnipeg include access to an in-house fleet of bicycles for transportation around downtown, a transit pass program, a carpool-planning directory to connect drivers with passengers, and a partnership with Peg City Car Co-op to provide occasional vehicle use for those who choose a more sustainable commute.

For office operations, the committee added a series of new initiatives, beyond its existing paper and plastics recycling program. The committee, for example, developed a list of food vendors for catered events that meet sustainability criteria, provided reusable dishware and cutlery for employee use, eliminated wasteful single-use coffee brewing systems for a more sustainable bean-to-carafe process, implemented an office-wide composting program, and provided reusable water bottles to all employees.

The Manitoba Round Table for Sustainable Development established the Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Awards to recognize and honour people, projects and ideas that successfully turn the principles and guidelines of sustainable development into concrete, lasting achievements.
