Stantec's new office in Winnipeg is the gold standard when it comes to a commuter friendly workplace, according to the Green Action Centre.

The Centre presented Stantec with their Gold Commuter Friendly Workplace Award on Wednesday for their efforts to provide a variety of transportation options to their new location at Centrepoint on Portage Avenue, and educate their employees on the commuting style that would work best for them.

'Our goal was to bring our people together from four offices into one downtown location, but we knew that would provide commuting challenges for some,' says Eric Wiens, Stantec's vice president for Manitoba. 'This award recognizes our team's hard work to make the transition as easy as possible, and their creative ideas that provide reliable and sustainable transportation for our people.'

Efforts included creating maps that clearly outline the commute to work from each major neighbourhood in Winnipeg. They included time estimates by car, bus, bike, and on foot, as well as the cost savings of car alternatives. Employees choosing to move downtown received a complimentary transit pass, and new team members are eligible for a 30 per cent discount on a transit EcoPass. If employees need a car for business purposes during the day, Stantec covers the cost of the registration fee for Peg City Car Co-op, with a vehicle located on site. The result is a 230 per cent increase in employees using transit.

Cycling is also a priority. Staff have access to one of three office bicycles, or can park their own in a 30-stall bike lockup. Showers and lockers are available for active commuters. An online carpool-matching portal is also available for those staff looking to share their commute to work.

'We are very proud of our Sustainability Committee in Winnipeg for all their efforts to ensure our new office not only contributes to a more vibrant downtown, but does so in a sustainable way,' says Keith Shillington, Stantec's senior vice president for Canada Prairies. 'Bringing our people together to collaborate in one location provides more opportunities to develop creative design solutions for our clients, so providing commute options that work for them makes good sense for both our business and the community.'

The Commuter Friendly Workplace Award is a uniquely Manitoban award, presented annually by Green Action Centre to recognize workplaces that support their employees to choose green commuting options year-round through a mix of policies, programs, infrastructure and benefits.

Green Action Centre is a non-profit, community-based organization in Manitoba that promotes greener living through environmental education and encourages practical green solutions for households, workplaces, schools, and communities.
