With its operating policy of "minimizing waste and maximizing recycling", TSMC promotes green manufacturing, actively implements sustainable resource management systems and has achieved a waste recycle rate of 95% for six consecutive years. In October 2021, the first and second phase of Fab 12 obtained the highest platinum rating for zero waste to landfill (UL 2799 certification) in line with TSMC's commitment to its Environmental Policy.

Four Directives on Sustainable Resource Management Linking to International Standards

To build a waste management system with the circular economy at its core, TSMC started by "establishing an on-site waste management system" that defined procedures and set up comprehensive training mechanisms. It then sought to reduce environmental impact by "reducing waste at the source". TSMC then went on to "promote various sustainable projects" by leading the development of domestic recycling technologies. Finally, it expanded its management experience to waste treatment companies by "building an intelligent waste management system" to optimize the overall tracking process with innovative technology and move towards the sustainable goal of zero waste to landfill.

TSMC's Directives and Achievements for Sustainable Resource Management

TSMC not only incorporates sustainable resource management into its own operations, but also actively collaborates with vendors to lead the development of resource regeneration technology and maximize green power. TSMC is a role model for the semiconductor industry.

Initiating the Reuse of Waste Quartz in the Manufacturing Process, Innovating the Sustainable Recycling of Resources

Starting with 100% recycling of inorganic sludge at the source, TSMC has continued to develop a number of recycling and reuse projects, such as converting the earthworks generated during repairs into low-strength concrete. In order to further achieve sustainable resource recycling innovation, TSMC is committed to the use of recycle waste materials in the manufacturing process. Borrowing from the successful experience of recycling electronic-grade copper materials, TSMC is working with suppliers to recycle the quartz disks that were originally buried in landfills as quartz rings. The recycled quartz rings are expected to be reused in the semiconductor manufacturing process in December 2021.

TSMC strives toward a mutually beneficial relationship between its operations and the environment. To expand the implementation of the circular economy, it is expected that all fabs in Taiwan will jointly obtain the UL 2799 platinum certification before 2023. The Company will also continue to extend its green experience to other fabs and subsidiaries around the world, implementing its mission of sustainable resource regeneration.
