Teleperformance : Energy Efficiency within Teleperformance

Electricity consumption is the top emission source for Teleperformance. Being spread across 88 countries, this impact cannot be considered neglectable. Just in 2021, electricity consumption, or Scope 2 of emissions, represented 34% of the Group's total CO₂ emissions. Yet, we have managed to reduce our electricity consumption and emissions year to year. This reduction can be partially allocated to the introduction of renewable energies across the board. However, switching to a greener source does not impact consumption.

Consumption reduction at Teleperformance has been achieved through the incorporation of locally relevant initiatives across the board. The goal of having these initiatives locally is that they allow each site to tackle the areas that are most important to them. For example, sites that have only one floor in a building may decide to tackle high consumption produced by leaving the bathroom lights on all day.

But what do we mean by improved efficiency? When talking about electricity, we can refer to efficiency as the capability of an equipment to consume less power. It can also be achieving the same results or improving the way a specific building area uses electricity through the implementation of Energy Management Systems (EMS). At Teleperformance, we have a mix of both.

One of the most common efficiency measures within our premises is the conversion to LED lights. These types of lights can reduce consumption by at least 75% on average when compared to incandescent lights. Today, Teleperformance sites in countries where we have the most operations have already partially or fully migrated to the use of this lighting.

Yet this is not the only physical efficiency initiative that has been taken up by our sites. Initiatives such as the automation of air conditioning and the installation of motion sensors across the premises have also helped reduce consumption across the board.

Another initiative that has helped in this effort is the replacement of old air conditioning systems for modern ones. Replacing these systems can help reduce consumption by at least 40% when compared to older (10 years up) models. Moreover, at least 52 of our premises are ISO 14001- or ISO 5001-certified, which means that we have a careful methodology put in place to track and manage our electricity, one of our most important environmental indicators.

However, physical initiatives can only reduce consumption up to a certain point. A big portion of consumption reduction relies on the way we behave towards the electronics that surround us in the office. Are we turning off the lights when we leave a meeting room? Or are we leaving the entire building's lights on, even when they are not in use? To tackle this, our sites in the Philippines have inspired themselves during the Earth Day initiative and have achieved a reduction of 21,309 kWh just in 2021 (on average, a US household consumes about 11,000 kWh/year. In France, it's about 6,400 kWh/year).

But what is Earth Day and how did our sites in the Philippines use this to their advantage? The Earth Day initiative is a yearly movement that is observed globally, where we shut power down for a full hour. Yet, one hour out of a full year's seemed a bit small, and so our colleagues took the initiative to make Earth Day a monthly initiative in which they shut down empty areas of their buildings for a full hour. Paired with the introduction of renewable energies in late 2021, these initiatives have helped our Philippines sites reduce consumption and emissions by almost 10% just between 2020 and 2021.

Our initiatives don't stop there. Through our Citizen of the Planet (COTP) initiative, we continuously encourage constant communication across multiple sites, and regularly host meetings to exchange information on these types of initiatives while also spreading best practices. Through COTP, Teleperformance also often holds consciousness webinars that aim to educate our employees to better take care of the environment.
