CHICAGO (AP) _ Boeing Co. (BA) on Wednesday reported a third-quarter loss of $449 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

The Chicago-based company said it had a loss of 79 cents per share. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were $1.39 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of $2.33 per share.

The airplane builder posted revenue of $14.14 billion in the period, also exceeding Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $13.81 billion.

Boeing shares have declined 52% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed nearly 5%. The stock has declined 54% in the last 12 months.
