THE STAR NAMED LEADER IN DOW JONES SUSTAINABILITY INDEX FOR THIRD YEAR IN A ROW

The Star Entertainment Group is proud to announce it has retained its status as the global leader in the 'Casinos and Gaming' sector of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).

The Star is one of only two Australian-based companies named on the DJSI World Index, while it's No.1 industry position following the annual DJSI assessment has now been extended to three consecutive years.

In addition to being recognised as the sustainability leader in Casino and Gaming, The Star Entertainment Group also achieved overall industry best scores in the Environmental and Social Dimension.

"Being recognised as an industry leader on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index is a testament to The Star's commitment to delivering socially, environmentally and economically sustainable integrated resorts," said Matt Bekier, Managing Director and CEO, The Star Entertainment Group.

"Having achieved the global leadership position in the Gaming and Casino sector for a third consecutive year demonstrates that sustainable business practices are integral to our business strategy and integrated within all levels of the organisation.

"We are dedicated to ensuring our current portfolio and future developments in Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast have positive and lasting impacts on the communities and cities in which we operate."

The Star Entertainment Group is on track to achieve its 10-year targets of 30% reduction in carbon emissions and water intensity by 2023. While 2018 marked the mid-point towards those goals, throughout the year The Star achieved several milestones across its properties supporting its sustainability targets.

These included:

  • 17% carbon emission reduction per square meter (against base year FY2013) surpassing target

  • implementation of over 35 projects which have delivered over $2.7 million in cost savings, against a business as usual scenario and environmental saving such as energy and water use and carbon emissions since FY2015

  • Installation of 'waterless woks' at The Star Sydney estimated to save 12,658 kL water per annum

  • donating nearly 14,000 kilograms of food to OzHarvest

  • donating over 2,631kgs of used soaps to the Soap Aid recycling program

  • launching a sustainability engagement program to educate team members on our targets, and how to help achieve them

  • recycling of Nespresso packaging across all hotels

  • awarded Australian Hotels Association National Winner for 'Best Environmental & Energy Efficiency Practice' - The Star Sydney

The Star Entertainment Group's ambition to create greener, more efficient properties and improving its sustainability outcomes is further highlighted through the deepening of existing industry partnerships and the fostering of new relationships.

Following the multi-billion-dollar Queen's Wharf Brisbane development achieving a 6 Star Green Community Rating from the Green Building Council of Australia in 2017, The Star Entertainment Group has also:

  • achieved a 5 Star Green Star Interiors Rating for the Sydney Corporate Office at 60 Union St in September 2018

  • committed to a Green Star Performance Rating for The Star Sydney

The Star Sydney has also become a founding partner of the City of Sydney's Sustainable Destination Partnership and will work across the Accommodation and Entertainment sector in Sydney to drive best practice and lift standards across the hotel industry.

The Star Entertainment Group is set to grow substantially with over 5 billion dollars of investment by the Group and its partners into national assets and integrated resorts by 2023.

"Building sustainably, targeting reductions in our carbon footprint and ensuring we continue to open more energy efficient floor space creates the future buildings we wish to operate, said Amanda Visser, Group Sustainability Manager at The Star Entertainment Group.

"Supporting our City's Plans for the future and engaging our team members as part of this journey is not only part of our long term sustainability strategy, it creates better places in our cities, it creates places our team members like to work."
