Toshiba Corp. has obtained $80 million supply contract from Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association Inc. As per this contract, Toshiba will construct and provide $80 million turbine and generator for the proposed coal-fired power plant near Holcomb. Sunflower Electric will operate the plant and will get nearly 200MW of power from the plant. This contract comes even as the construction of the plant is on hold, pending a Kansas Supreme Court decision on an appeal filed by Sierra Club, which objected to the issue of construction consent by Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Tri-State will buy steam turbine and generator, which is expected to offer 971MW electricity. But the plant permit allows only 89MW production. The delivery of the equipment is expected to be done for July 2014. The plant is likely to begin operations in 2017.
