ABB facility to demonstrate all-round ABB Ability™ digital offerings and segment solutions

On November 13, the ABB Technology Experience Center officially opened in the north building of ABB Xiamen Hub, Fujian province. Planned to coincide with the company's technology fair, 'ABB Customer World 2018,' also in Xiamen, the center's inaugural event gave customers the opportunity to experience first-hand ABB's pioneering technologies, from substation to socket through the ABB Ability™ platform of digital solutions. Among the exhibits at the center are demonstrations of ABB's cloud services and remote factory testing capabilities. There is also a smart lab and a segment sand table, which simulates electricity flows in ten segments, such as the rail segment for example.

Tarak Mehta, president of ABB's Electrification Products division said, 'Our investment here in Xiamen, shows that we are committed to the Chinese market and we will continue with similar investments to ensure the further development of pioneering technologies for our customers here in China and across the globe.'

The smart lab is at the heart of the ABB Technology Experience Center. The facility enables customers to observe the performance of ABB products and solutions for industry, utilities and infrastructure under a range of operational conditions. The technologies available for customer demonstrations include ABB's leading solutions in micro-grids, digital substations and distribution automation, industrial power supplies, transport, buildings and industrial automation.

The innovative lab focuses on user experience and product performance in different operational environments. Visitors can observe system operations under simulated conditions. For example, the Smart Lab's distribution automation system comprises a typical distribution network with integrated medium-voltage switchgear, a ring-main unit, chargers for electric vehicles and REF615 relays. Visitors can trigger faults, such as a single-phase grounding fault, and observe how ABB's equipment performs. In this case, the system uses a low-current grounding-line solution based on multi-frequency admittance technology. ABB's fast self-healing solution has been applied in key projects in China, raising the reliability of power supplies to 99.999 percent.

As the fourth industrial revolution gathers pace and more customers seek expert support and smart technologies to meet their needs in renewable energy, micro-grids and smart distribution, ABB's solutions are being widely adopted.

In addition to distribution automation, the Smart Lab enables customers to experience the latest technologies and solutions in arc-guard protection, load shedding and automatic transfer switching. The Center's digital switchgear installation provides a demonstration of power- management and asset-maintenance capabilities using the cloud-based digital services of ABB Ability™ electrical distribution control system (EDCS).

The industry section of the Technology Experience Center showcases ABB's advanced Remote Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) program. Visitors can observe a factory production site and real-time equipment testing via a digital interface, connected to the Cloud. They can check and accept switchgear deliveries using real-time video and audio services via a range of digital devices, including desk computers and mobile devices, thus improving efficiency.

Representing an investment of 2 billion yuan (approximate $300 million) and covering an area of 430,000 square meters, ABB's Hub at Xiamen is home to both manufacturing and R&D facilities, further strengthening its ability to meet customers' needs. The manufacturing facility comprises ABB's largest plant for medium- and low-voltage products and services and state-of-the-art 1,200kV ultra-high voltage (UHV) test field, which is China's highest-voltage level test facility. Also on site are ABB's MNS® low-voltage switchgear lab, its second largest R&D center for low-voltage electrical systems and the company's first remote service center in China using industrial-internet technology.
