BP PLC on Thursday said it named David Lawler chairman and president of BP America Inc., its U.S. unit, effective July 1.

BP said Mr. Lawler succeeds Susan Dio, who is retiring later this year after 36 years with the U.K. oil giant.

Mr. Lawler, who will become BP's chief representative in the U.S., will also continue as chief executive of BPX Energy, the company's U.S. onshore oil-and-gas business.

BP's U.S. business has 13,000 employees and accounted for a third of the company's $278 billion in global revenue last year.

Ms. Dio, who joined BP in 1984, has been chairman and president of BP America since September 2018. Mr. Lawler has been CEO of BPX Energy since 2014.
