With Japan's central bank maintaining a negative interest rate policy, Toyota Motor Corp. will become the country's first private company to issue zero-rate bonds, one of the securities houses underwriting the debt said Saturday.

The automaker's 20 billion yen ($185 million) issue of three-year bonds will carry an interest rate of 0.001 percent and be sold at slightly above face value, meaning its yield will be zero at maturity, Mizuho Securities Co. officials said.

There is strong demand for the bond from banks and asset management companies expecting its selling prices to be above face value at a time when the Bank of Japan's negative rate policy is keeping the yield on the 10-year Japanese government bond in subzero territory, according to Mizuho Securities.
