Shares of retailers and other consumer companies rose, but not by as much as the broad market, as uncertainty about a second stimulus package offset a relatively strong jobs report. American employers added 1.8 million jobs, bringing the unemployment rate down to 10.2% from a peak of nearly 15% in April, but still far from the prepandemic lows. The chief executive of decking-materials maker Trex said it was unclear how long consumers will continue to spend at current levels on home improvement without federal stimulus backing them up. An Air India Express flight carrying 190 people overshot the runway amid heavy rain in the state of Kerala in southern India, killing at least 11 people, according to the country's civil-aviation agency.
