Fourteen people were killed when a student gunman opened fire on Thursday (December 21), before taking his own life as police closed in.

Authorities have asked that the suspect not be named.

They say he killed his father in their hometown of Hostoun before traveling the 14 miles into Prague to continue his deadly spree at Charles University.

Neighbors were left in shock by the attack.

"It's a tragedy; we didn't know the guy. The mood in the village is at a freezing point."

Czechs mourned the victims on Friday as police tightened security around schools and other public buildings.

The Health Ministry said 27 people were admitted or treated at six Prague hospitals, many with gunshot wounds. Of those, 12 remained in serious condition and at least one was in critical condition.

Authorities also began releasing more details about the attack and events that preceded the shooting.

Police had information from a friend of the shooter that he intended to kill himself and were searching for him at a university building where he was due to attend a lecture.

But he instead went to a different building, on a busy square across the river from Prague Castle and just a few hundred meters from the Old Town Square tourist attraction.

He was carrying multiple weapons.

Police also suspect the gunman of shooting to death a young father and his two-month old daughter in the woods near a village outside of Prague last week in a random attack.

"Indicators absolutely point to that direction. Nevertheless, we're waiting on the results from ballistic tests. And you will be certainly informed about the certainty that this is one and the same perpetrator."

Police said on Thursday the man had a gun license and no criminal record.

Mass shootings are rare in the Czech Republic, where over 300,000 of the almost 11 million population hold firearms licenses.
