(Alliance News) - Major European stock exchanges are expected to rise on IG futures on Monday, at the start of a week that will see the European Central Bank take center stage, with its announcement on its interest rates scheduled for Thursday.

"With much of the European economy grappling with weak demand," comments Michael Hewson, Chief Market Analyst at CMC Markets, "as well as an economy that has seen very little growth since the third quarter of 2022, calls for the ECB to consider a modest easing of monetary policy have been growing louder. In contrast to "Joachim Nagel of the Bundesbank, Robert Holzmann of Austria and ECB President Christine Lagarde," who dismissed the idea of an early rate cut last week, "although Lagarde kept open the possibility of a summer rate cut."

Thus, the FTSE Mib is expected to rise 202.5 points or 0.7 percent after closing in the red by 0.8 percent to 30,098.86, London's FTSE 100 is expected to open in the green by 17.9 points or 0.2 percent, Paris' CAC 40 is given a gain of 46.7 points or 0.7 percent while Frankfurt's DAX 40 advances 122.5 points or 0.7 percent.

"After rallying toward the end of last year," Hewson further points out, "markets in the U.S. have picked up where they left off, with new record highs for all three major indexes, led by the Nasdaq 100, which is up 2.9 percent since the start of the year, thanks to further gains from the Magnificent 7, led by Nvidia, up 20 percent since the start of the year.

The current divergence between the U.S. and European markets, according to the analyst, "is likely due to the belief that the U.S. economy is in much better shape than its European counterparts, a belief that is likely to be further reinforced this week by the latest U.S. fourth-quarter GDP data, ahead of the week's upcoming Fed meeting."
