BOLOGNA AIRPORT: 80 THOUSAND PASSENGERS IN NOVEMBER (-88.5%)

Extraordinary performance for air freight: goods transported grew by 42.9%

Covid-19 pandemic outbreak keeps on affecting Bologna Airport's traffic volumes, as is the case for all Italian and European airports. Also as a consequence of the new restrictions on international flights, in November passenger volumes decreased by 88.5% on the same month of 2019, with 81,710 passengers, of which 40,261 on domestic flights (-73.0%)

and 41,449 on international flights (-92.6%).

In a general framework characterized by decreasing volumes across the whole market, in the ranking of the most popular destinations of the month were Catania, Palermo and Amsterdam, ranked in the first three places, followed by: Casablanca, Brindisi, Tirana, Cagliari, Madrid, Lamezia and Istanbul.

Monthly flight movements were 1,706, -69.3%on November 2019, while air freight registered an increase of 42.9% on the same month of 2019, totaling 4,681 tons. This was made possible above all thanks to the restart of the direct flight to Dubai three times a week - of which the large hold is exploited - and the activation of a series of special cargo flights to/from China and the U.S., for the import of medical equipment and for the export of luxury products of the territory, including cars, clothing, footwear and food to the East and to the U.S.

In the first eleven months of 2020, Bologna Airport has recorded 2,406,260 passengers (-72.3%), with 25,763 movements (-61.7%) and 30,226 tons of transported goods (-13.6%).Air freight cargo is the business unit that best reacted to the pandemic crisis.

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport, classified as a "strategic airport" in the centre-north area of the National Airports Plan prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, in 2019 was the seventh biggest Italian airport by passenger numbers, with 9.4 million passengers (Source: Assaeroporti). Located in the heart of the Emilian food valley and the automotive and packaging industrial districts, the airport has a catchment area of about 11 million inhabitants and around 47,000 companies, with a strong propensity to exports and internationalisation and with commercial expansion policies to Eastern Europe and Asia.

The presence at the airport of some of the largest airlines in Europe along with some of the leading low-cost carriers and the close link with European continental hubs make Bologna Italy's forth airport for global connectivity (Source: ICCSAI - Fact Book 2019).

As for airport infrastructure, the airport has among its strategic objectives in the next few years an important development plan that mainly concerns the expansion of the terminal, particularly in the parts of security checks and gate area. The company's aim is to make Bologna Airport one of the most modern and functional in Italy, an important gateway to the city and region.
