BOLOGNA AIRPORT: FOR THE FIRST TIME OVER 9 MILLION PASSENGERS

TRAVELLED THROUGH THE AIRPORT IN 2019 (+10.6%)

Strengthened focus on sustainable development

One more year on the growth for Bologna Airport: in 2019, for the first time, passenger traffic was over 9 million (9,405,920*), delivering an increase of 10.6% on 2018, entirely driven by international traffic. In detail, international passengers reached 7,439,577 (+14.0%), while domestic passengers were 1,957,731 (-0.9%).

Sunday 30th June was last year's busiest day with 33,296 arriving and departing passengers.

In 2019 flight movements (77,126*) delivered an increase of 7.9%, while air cargo performance slowed down by 7.2% on previous year, totaling 48,810 tons.

Last year's three most popular destinations were: Catania, with almost 400 thousand passengers, Barcelona, 390 thousand passengers and Madrid, 310 thousand passengers. The top-ten ranking also includes Frankfurt, London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Rome Fiumicino, Palermo, London Stansted and Amsterdam.

The month of December performed well, too, exceeding for the first time 700 thousand passengers (708,694), recording a 9.5% increase, with 5,858 flight movements (+6.1%), while air cargo decreased by 7.9%, totaling 3,743 tons.

Traffic trend was positive throughout the year, exceeding 700 thousand passengers each month, apart from January and February, reaching higher peaks in the Summer period, up to 900 thousand passengers per month.

Passenger growth went together with the commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. During 2019, Bologna Airport and 40 other European Airport Management Companies signed "NetZero2050" agreement to completely decarbonize airport activities by 2050.

Consistently with a long-standing strategy committed to sustainable growth, in the ten-year period 2008-2018,CO2 emissions produced by sources under the Airport's direct functional and operational control decreased from 2.17 to 0.78 kg per passenger, that is a cut of 64%. CO2 emissions in absolute value dropped as well, passing from 9,145 to 6,621 tons, a decrease of 28%. As a matter of fact, for ten years now Bologna Airport has been a member of worldwide program "Airport Carbon Accreditation" to reduce GHG emissions and its activity is constantly measured and checked.

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport, classified as a "strategic airport" in the centre-north area of the National Airports Plan prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, in 2018 was the eighth biggest Italian airport by passenger numbers, with 8.5 million passengers, of which 76,8% on international flights (Source: Assaeroporti). Located in the heart of the Emilian food valley and the automotive and packaging industrial districts, the airport has a catchment area of about 11 million inhabitants and around 47,000 companies, with a strong propensity to exports and internationalisation and with commercial expansion policies to Eastern Europe and Asia.

In 2018 114 destinations were served from Bologna: the presence at the airport of some of the largest airlines in Europe along with some of the leading low-cost carriers and the close link with European continental hubs make Bologna Italy's

forth airport in for global connectivity (Source: ICCSAI - Fact Book 2019) and the first in Europe in terms of growth of

connectivity in the decade from 2004 to 2014 (Source: ACI Europe Airport Connectivity Report 2004-2014).

As for airport infrastructure, the airport has among its strategic objectives in the next few years an important development plan that mainly concerns the expansion of the terminal, particularly in the parts of security checks and gate area. The company's aim is to make Bologna Airport one of the most modern and functional in Italy, an important gateway to the city and region.
