Charlotte Dodge, Naval Architect | ABL London

What do you do at ABL?

I am currently in my fourth and final year of the Engineer Development Scheme, and I am working as a Naval Architect in the shipping team in the London office.

I have previously worked in both Longitude and LOC offices - prior to LOC becoming ABL. Over the years on the scheme I have gained experience in technical analysis work, as well as in marine warranty survey work whilst in Aberdeen and Norway.

As part of the shipping team, the role is very varied and can be very dependent on the different work that comes in. I am currently involved in a number of different projects, with a variety of different focuses including floating offshore wind and clean shipping / vessel emissions.

What inspired you to go into the field you are in?

I was originally drawn to Naval Architecture through my love of sailing, and subsequently to ABL due to the wide scope of opportunities available and the possibility to work in many different areas of the industry, and also the chance to live abroad.

What do you enjoy about working at ABL?

There is such a wide range of different work and challenges, and it gives me the chance to work both in the office and on site. It also gives me the opportunity to work alongside experts in their respective fields and there is always something new to learn.

What is the most exciting aspect of the energy transition for you?

This is an exciting time to be working in shipping and the maritime industry, with big changes and challenges ahead. Working at ABL gives me the opportunity to work with those at the forefront of developing and implementing many of these new and innovative technologies and solutions that will be vital for the energy transition.

What do you enjoy in your spare time?

I enjoy spending time outdoors - hiking, skiing, swimming, sailing and running - and I love a challenge, and recently completed my first 100 mile ultra-marathon! I have been fortunate in the last couple of years to be placed in both Aberdeen and Stavanger which both have incredible countryside on the doorstep, and by joining local running clubs I was really able to make the most of it!

I also enjoy food - cooking for friends, baking or eating out and trying new dishes, and London is a great place for this! I have very recently started learning to knit which is a good hobby for rainy days.
