Commentary for the quarterCoal:
• March 2014 quarter volumes of 48.6mt represented growth of 11% compared to the previous corresponding period (pcp)
• Queensland volumes increased 14% compared to the pcp due to increased demand, with a major customer operating under a legacy contract continuing to contribute a significant portion of the growth. Volumes in the quarter were impacted by weather related port closures which are
typical during the March quarter as well as seasonal effects following the end of the calendar year
• NSW volumes increased 2% compared to the pcp with growth impacted by industrial action in late February as well as seasonal effects
• Net Tonne Kilometres (NTK) growth of 19% compared to the pcp reflects increased growth in longer haul contracts in Queensland
• Guidance for FY2014 remains 207‐212mt which takes into account recent (April) weather impacts from tropical cyclone Ita
Iron ore:
• March 2014 quarter volumes of 7.5mt represent 14% growth compared to the pcp and remain consistent with the ramp up towards full contractual
railings of 30mt in FY2014. As disclosed to the market in February during our 1HFY2014 results, our contractual railings for FY2015 will decline due to the end of two contracts (Mineral Resources and Mt Gibson's Tallering Peak mine)
• NTKs grew 11%, consistent with the volume growth
Freight:
• March 2014 quarter volumes of 10.8mt represent a 3% decrease compared to the pcp
• Bulk volumes decreased 6% compared to the pcp principally due to one customer's supply of nickel being impacted by an Indonesian Government
embargo on nickel exports in addition to other minor supply and demand issues for other customers
• Intermodal volumes have increased 20% compared to the pcp principally due to volumes from new customers
• NTKs were flat compared to the pcp due to the long hauls associated with the new Intermodal volumes increasing the average haul length
