MILAN, March 18 (Reuters) - Alessandro Rivera, a former director general at Italy's Treasury, has joined Boston Consulting Group (BCG) as senior adviser to strengthen its financial institutions team, BCG said on Monday.

Rivera held the top job at the Rome Treasury from 2018 to 2023, having previously led its division in charge of banks.

In those roles he oversaw key dossiers such as a state bailout of Tuscan Bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena in 2017 and a make-or-break capital raising the lender completed five years later.

Rivera took the job of senior adviser for Europe at investment firm Bain Capital in December, a role he is set to retain, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni replaced him as Treasury director general in January last year, appointing economist Riccardo Barbieri. (Reporting by Valentina Za and Giuseppe Fonte Editing by Gavin Jones and David Goodman )
