cbdMD : What's In Your CBD Skin Care? Do You Know? ...

04/28/2021 | 07:16am EDT

CBD oil has gradually become a household staple as more and more people look for alternative ways to promote calm and relaxation. CBD tinctures and CBD gummies are usually what come to mind when people think of CBD. But did you know CBD has actually integrated into the skincare industry within the last few years?

The CBD industry is booming, and with so many products hitting the market these days, it can be hard to know where to begin. Or what exactly is in the products you're putting in your body and absorbing through your skin.

Have You Looked at Your CBD Labels?

Do you know what's in your skin care? You should

From THC to hemp seed oil, all manner of ingredients could be in your CBD cosmetics. While it's natural for many people to scan through the ingredients label to make sure there isn't anything that will adversely affect their skin, most take the product label at face value. That means if the front of the product says it includes CBD, they just assume it does - and often don't stop to consider what kind of concentration the product actually contains.

If you really want to know what you're putting on your skin, you might have to do more than just look at the label. Until recently, products containing (or claiming to contain) CBD have not been regulated. Thankfully though, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun to address the issue.

Do Your CBD Cosmetics Contain THC? Because They Shouldn't

From 2014 to 2018 the FDA selected 78 products for humans and pets that were labeled as containing CBD, many of which were marketed as having major health benefits. Of those 78 products, only 86 percent actually contained CBD, and 88 percent contained any kind of cannabinoids.

The FDA referred two of them to the Drug Enforcement Agency because of illegal quantities of controlled substances, including a large amount of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The 2018 Farm Bill dictated that CBD products are considered federally legal if they contain less than 0.3 percent THC, which is the psychoactive substance that leads to a 'high.'

In another study, the FDA found that of 31 products tested, only seven of them actually contained within 20 percent of the amount of CBD listed on their label. Furthermore, of those 31 products, the FDA discovered that almost half of them (48 percent) contained THC.

CBD Oil vs. Hemp Seed Oil

CBD oil and hemp seed oil are two very different things. While CBD oil is made from the stalks, leaves, and flowers of the plant (which contain CBD), hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. Although rich in nutritional antioxidants, omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, and other compounds, hemp seed oil does not contain CBD.

Hemp seed oil has some basic nutritional benefits, such as maintaining good cardiovascular health and supporting the immune system, but it doesn't interact with your endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Humans naturally produce endocannabinoids which have receptors throughout your body. The ECS is responsible for keeping your body on track, and when you consume CBD, the cannabinoids interact with your ECS to promote a better, healthier balance in your body.

Make sure you read product labels carefully! Know what you're paying for.

Companies have been known to market their hemp seed oil by highlighting and emphasizing the word cannabis on the product label, which leads consumers to believe they're purchasing CBD. This also allows companies to upcharge for a product, since consumers are willing to pay more for products that contain CBD and hemp seed oil is cheaper to manufacture. Marketing a product as 'hemp seed-based' can also allow companies to skirt FDA regulations.

Check the ingredients list: hemp seed oil would be listed as cannabis sativa seed oil while CBD will usually be listed as cannabidiol.

CBD Skin Care Companies: To Trust, Or Not To Trust?

Did you know that only 34 percent of the cosmetic products that claim to contain CBD list a specific CBD concentration on their labels? Even worse, an FDA report found that 57 percent of those labeled products contained less than 80 percent of the CBD amount indicated on the label.

So what does that mean?

It means that of the 41 products the FDA tested in 2019, 65.8 percent of those CBD cosmetics didn't specify how much CBD was supposedly in their products. And only 14.6 percent of them actually contained the amount of CBD they indicated on their label. As a matter of fact, 5 percent of the products tested contained 120 percent of the amount of CBD they claimed to contain on the label. Twenty-nine percent of the products tested also contained THC, which wasn't listed on their label.

The FDA also found that a number of products that claimed to contain CBD oil didn't contain any measurable amount of cannabinoids at all. Almost as if some of the most popular brands out there claim to manufacture CBD products just so they can skyrocket their prices.

The bottom line?

Do your research and ask questions before choosing the right CBD cosmetics for you. If the company is trustworthy and reputable, it will have all the information you need readily available, including third-party test results to prove their products are legitimate - meaning they contain what they say they contain.

Make sure you know what you're feeding your skin.

The Best CBD Skin Care on the Market

So after you've waded through all the misinformation out there, there's only one thing left for you to decide: what kind of CBD product do you want?

Be it CBD topicals for post-exercise muscle recovery, CBD botanicals with Superior Broad Spectrum CBD, or CBD bath products for the ultimate luxury and relaxation experience - cbdMD offers you the best CBD skin care possible. Made with the purest ingredients nature has to offer, our CBD cosmetics give you that extra little boost other products can't provide.

Did you know cbdMD also offers body balms to relieve dry, cracked skin in an easy to carry container? Or that you can keep your lips soft and smooth all year long with CBD lip balms?

CBD Topicals

Every batch of cbdMD CBD topicals is carefully formulated with our Superior Broad Spectrum hemp extract, which includes CBD, cannabinol (CBN), cannabigerol (CBG), and additional terpenes. With so many CBD creams, ointments, and lotions out there, cbdMD sets itself apart by using THC-free,* lab-tested formulas to bring you trusted, products in a cost-effective package.

CBD topicals are made to target specific areas of your body and include essential oils, amino acids, and other ingredients designed to help provide everyday support. Designed for your everyday convenience, cbdMD's CBD topicals can be used as roll-ons, sprays, and creams in squeeze tubes or tubs, and come in five varieties: CBD Freeze, CBD Recover, CBD Relieve, CBD Revive, and CBD Oil Balm.

CBD topicals and CBD ointments provide targeted support where you need it most, and many contain active, approved pain relievers. Gels and creams with menthol, histamine dihydrochloride, or lidocaine can provide temporary relief for sore muscles and joints. The plant extracts and other ingredients contained in CBD topicals are gentle on the skin and may relieve the minor discomfort you experience after strenuous exercise.

So What's the Difference Between Our Products?

cbdMD's Freeze Pain-Relieving Gel comes in a roll-on applicator and is formulated to combine the pain-relieving effects of menthol with the benefits of CBD. Menthol is a preferred temporary pain-relief agent for minor muscle aches, stiffness, back pain, and joint pain.

cbdMD's Recover Pain-Relieving Formula is a CBD topical cream formulated to integrate histamine dihydrochloride for temporary pain relief. The product also features arnica, vitamin B6, MSM, and our Superior Broad Spectrum hemp extract. Histamine dihydrochloride is known for a subtle, soothing warming sensation around achy joints and muscles, and can be used up to four times a day.

cbdMD's CBD Relieve is available in both roll-on and spray applicators, making it even easier for you to receive CBD benefits every day. CBD Relieve features lidocaine, a local anesthetic for temporary pain relief. Of course, it also features CBD for recovery after strenuous work or exercise.

Need something for general, everyday skincare? cbdMD has you covered. cbdMD's CBD Revive Moisturizing Lotion is formulated to keep your skin properly moisturized without feeling oily or greasy. CBD Revive includes acai berry, passionfruit, rice bran, and shea butter all packed in a convenient squeeze tube without strong fragrances for everyday use.

CBD oil balms are designed to be applied to specific target areas. With 300 mg of CBD, CBD Body Balm comes in a stick applicator, making it portable for all-day use. cbdMD also has a solution for your dry or cracked lips - available in mint hibiscus, blackberry acai, and sweet vanilla, CBD Lip Balm packs amazing benefits into a small package.

Many of the CBD topicals at cbdMD also contain essential oils, amino acids, and other beneficial ingredients that help support everyday topical needs.
