China Southern Airlines Co.'s first-quarter loss widened by 12% from a year earlier due to muted revenue growth and weaker cost efficiencies.
The Chinese airway operator posted a net loss of 4.50 billion yuan (US$685.9 million) for the March quarter, slightly worse than the loss of CNY4.01 billion it recorded a year earlier.
Revenue edged up 1.0% to CNY21.47 billion, while operating expenses grew 6.2%, as global airlines took a hit from surging fuel costs over the past few months.
