HOUSTON (AP) _ ConocoPhillips (COP) on Tuesday reported third-quarter net income of $2.38 billion, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Houston-based company said it had profit of $1.78. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to $1.77 per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.53 per share.

The energy company posted revenue of $11.62 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $11.34 billion.
