Malala likens Taliban's treatment of women to apartheid

STORY: "My family and I know what it feels like to live under the Taliban ideology. At 11, I was banned from school. At 15, I was shot and nearly killed for standing up for my right to receive an education," Yousafzai said during the 21st Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg.

Yousafzai survived being shot in the head aged 15 by a Pakistani Taliban gunman after she was targeted for her campaign against the Taliban's efforts to deny girls education.

Since winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 she has become a global symbol of the resilience of women in the face of repression.

"I cannot fathom the injustice that the women in Afghanistan are facing. They're going through a gender apartheid," Yousafzai told Reuters.
