"Odorleship®"
Notification to be used in the International Space Station
Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Co., Inc. (Head Office: Tosu, Saga; President: NAKATOMI Kazuhide; hereinafter "Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical") announces that "Odorleship®" proposed by Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical was selected from "2nd Call for ideas for addressing the issues along with the solution that will apply to both living in space and living on Earth" solicited by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (hereinafter "JAXA"), and will be used in the International Space Station (hereinafter "ISS").
This is the second consecutive selection for installation on the ISS, following Fixpace®*1, which was selected in the "1st Call for ideas for addressing the issues along with the solution that will apply to both living in space and living on Earth.
Odorleship® is scheduled to be carried by Astronaut Kimiya Yui during his long-duration stay on the ISS around 2024.
■Background of Development
In the "Space Life Story Book *2" published by JAXA, "Garbage problem in closed isolated spaces, odor control" in zero gravity space is mentioned as one of the life issues in space. To solve this issue, Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical has developed "Odorleship®" using the patch technology that has been developed over many years.
■About "Odorleship®"
"Odorleship®" is a deodorant patch containing special activated carbon that absorbs odorous substances (ammonia, acetic acid, hydrogen sulfide, and methyl mercaptan) from food scraps, toilets, and body odor. It is applied to the inside of garbage bags, bathroom walls, toilet containers, and clothing, and expected to deodorize bothersome odors. In addition, "Odorleship®" is compact size patch (same size as "Salonpas®"（4.6cm×7.2cm）) which can be attached anywhere.
Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical will try to develop products to solve issues for living in Space and living on Earth using our developed technology, through "Fixpace®", which was implemented through the 1st Call for ideas and "Odorleship®", which will be implemented through this call for ideas.
In addition, Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical will continue to contribute to improving QOL (quality of life) of people around the world by conducting business activities based on the patch technology and know-how we have cultivated.
