The Hong Kong exchange has canceled all trading in the securities and derivatives markets for the day due to a typhoon alert issued by the government, which is currently at signal No. 8.

"No securities clearing and settlement services will be provided for the day," Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. said in a statement at noon.

Wednesday's morning session was already canceled.

This was the first time this year that trading on the local bourse was affected by a typhoon. In late June, trading was canceled in the morning session due to a severe rainstorm alert issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

At an event in July, HKEX CEO Nicolas Aguzin raised the prospect of trying to find a way for the market to continue operating during bad weather.

Referring to more people getting used to working from home during the pandemic, he said: "Should we leverage everything that we've learned to find a way? ...[The] reality is, there must be a way where we can make sure that when people [want to] trade the market is open."
