Woman rescued 5 days after Japan quake, as death toll tops 120

TOKYO - A woman was rescued from a collapsed house in Suzu, Ishikawa Prefecture on Saturday, five days after a powerful earthquake struck the prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast, as the death toll from the quake topped 120 with over 200 still unaccounted for, according to authorities.

A family member said the rescued woman is in her 90s. Suzu is one of the coastal cities hit hardest by the magnitude-7.6 quake that occurred in the Noto Peninsula, central Japan, on New Year's Day.

Coast guard pilot unlikely heard JAL-tower comms before crash

TOKYO - The captain of the coast guard plane that was involved in a collision with a Japan Airlines aircraft this week at Tokyo's Haneda airport may have not heard the exchanges between the JAL plane and the airport traffic controller as his radio may have been set at a different frequency, a transport ministry official said Saturday.

According to the transcript of the radio communications released Wednesday by the ministry, the tower controller, who determines when planes can enter the runway and take off, gave clearance to the JAL plane to land before the deadly accident occurred at one of Japan's busiest airports at around 5:47 p.m. Tuesday.

Ex-LDP secretary general Nikai questioned over growing funds scandal

TOKYO - Tokyo prosecutors have questioned the former secretary general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Toshihiro Nikai, and former reconstruction minister Katsuei Hirasawa on a voluntary basis over an enlarging political funds scandal, sources close to the matter said Saturday.

Prosecutors are investigating the LDP faction led by Nikai, as well as the largest faction formerly led by the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, over allegations they created slush funds through off-the-book revenues earned from fundraising parties and transferred them to member lawmakers, the sources said.

KANAZAWA, Japan - A woman in her 90s was rescued from a collapsed house in Suzu, Ishikawa Prefecture on Saturday, five days after a powerful earthquake struck the prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast, police said.

She was extracted from the rubble of a two-story house at around 8:20 p.m., and was responding to rescuers' questions, as police continued their rescue efforts despite the rainy weather.

Man arrested for pushing woman off JR station platform in Tokyo

TOKYO - A 39-year-old man was arrested Saturday for pushing an unacquainted woman off the platform onto the rail tracks at Tokyo's JR Shinagawa Station, police said.

The woman in her 60s was pushed from behind when waiting for a train at the major rail hub at around 1:30 p.m., the police said, adding that she was taken to hospital but suffered no life-threatening injuries.

N. Korea's Kim sends rare message of sympathy over Japan quake

BEIJING/TOKYO - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has sent a message of sympathy to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida over a deadly earthquake that hit central Japan on New Year's Day, state-run media said Saturday, in a rare move between the countries with no diplomatic ties.

It was Kim's first message to Kishida, according to Radio Press news agency, which monitors North Korea's official news media. Kishida has tried to realize an early summit meeting with Kim, but the plan has so far born no fruit.

KUMAGAYA, Japan - Saitama Wild Knights came storming back with 35 unanswered second-half points to claim a 43-27 win over Toyota Verblitz in Japan Rugby League One on Saturday.

Tomoki Osada scored a brace of tries for the Wild Knights, while opposing winger Viliame Tuidraki ran in a hat-trick to help the visitors take a 27-8 lead into halftime at Kumagaya Rugby Stadium.
