Tokyo, Japan, December 2, 2013 -- Kyowa Hakko Kirin Co., Ltd. (Tokyo; 4151, President and CEO: Nobuo Hanai, "Kyowa Hakko Kirin") announced today that it has closed its Yokkaichi plant (Yokkaichi, Mie) as of November 30, 2013.
Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co., Ltd. (before the merger with Kirin Pharma Co., Ltd.) completed construction of the Yokkaichi plant in December 1993 and manufacturing operations began in 1994. The Yokkaichi plant played an important role in the manufacture of drug substance for small-molecule drugs in the Kyowa Hakko Kirin's portfolio.
In January 2010, Kyowa Hakko Kirin released its 2010-12 Medium-term Business Plan and announced that production facilities would be reorganized to solve the problem of aging manufacturing sites and location requirements, make manufacturing more efficient, and improve cost competitiveness. The closure of the Yokkaichi plant is part of this reorganization. Daiichi Fine Chemical Co., Ltd. (Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture; President: Etsuo Ohshima), a subsidiary of Kyowa Hakko Bio Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Shuichi Ishino), will take on production of drug substance previously manufactured at the plant.
