The Chicago-based company said it had net income of $1.60 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to $2.55 per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 14 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.45 per share.

The world's biggest hamburger chain posted revenue of $5.72 billion in the period, falling short of Street forecasts. Eleven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $5.86 billion.
