In this blog post-part two in a two-part series-we talk to Mark Klaudtky, head of NetApp Google Cloud sales, EMEA. We get Mark's take on the NetApp® and Google Cloud integrated enterprise-grade solutions and the future of cloud (and what it means for the fortuitous-fate workloads). We also get his view on top-of-mind conversations among boardroom members.

In case you missed it, check out our previous blog post about the evolution of NetApp and its timely partnership with Google Cloud. It also covers key topics in workload management and how we keep the momentum going to infinity and beyond.

Let's dive right back in, Mark, with the phrase that every organization longs to hear: simple multicloud data management. What is the joint approach, and how do you integrate NetApp solutions with Google Cloud?

NetApp recently announced new innovations that deliver a simple, secure, and flexible hybrid multicloud experience.

Our approach is threefold: simplify hybrid cloud operations, protect against ransomware threats, and speed workload migration to the cloud. Each strategic approach provides a straight line to an overarching need: increased visibility. NetApp enables applications and data to be managed both on premises and in Google Cloud from a single pane of glass. Customers stay in control of their data estate operations across their hybrid multicloud.

Can you introduce some of the concrete software offerings from NetApp's collaboration with Google Cloud?

NetApp and Google Cloud have collaborated on several pivotal integrated solutions that provide enterprise-grade cloud storage. In 2019, we launched NetApp Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud. One year later, we rolled out the first software-defined version of that service. In the same year (2020), we hit two milestones together: NetApp Astra™ became the first Kubernetes data management solution on Google Cloud, and NetApp ONTAP® technology was launched as a service with support for migration, backup, and tiering.

What are some other ways that you're making it easier for customers to migrate to and to run business-critical applications on Google Cloud?

Last year, we expanded on our stellar record of joint innovation by providing storage infrastructure on Google Distributed Cloud Hosted. It's now easier and safer to modernize an on-premises deployment and to meet data security and privacy requirements. We have also empowered customers who are migrating VMware workloads to Google Cloud. They now have the cost-saving ability to scale compute and storage independently with NetApp Cloud Volumes guest access to their virtual machines in Google Cloud VMware Engine.

Please introduce Cloud Volumes Service and what it helps your joint customers achieve.

Enterprise customers need a way to deploy file workloads in the cloud without sacrificing performance, reliability, or data management. They also want to realize this benefit without the burden of building and maintaining file servers and storage.

Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud is a fully managed enterprise file storage solution on Google Cloud and powered by NetApp. Two types of Cloud Volumes Service are available:

  • General-purpose Cloud Volumes Service Standard-SW for volume deployments of standard enterprise storage workloads, with 128MiBps of performance, zone redundancy, and a 99.99% SLA
Who are some of your joint customers, and how have NetApp and Google Cloud helped them? Can you share one of your success stories?

We have hundreds of successful joint customers across many industries, including healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, retail, education, and more. Here is just one story:

MailerLite, a Lithuanian email marketing company, migrated more than 100 million files to Google Cloud and is currently running an extensive NFS in the cloud. In just 1 hour, the company had all its files in Google Cloud and overcame the availability, management, and maintenance issues that it had experienced in the past.

Nikola Milojević, CTO of MailerLite, expressed the company's satisfaction: "On the migration day, it took maybe 1 hour-and we had all our files safe on Google Cloud. NetApp XCP is amazing. No other data mover tool on the market can achieve that. And we tried a bunch of them."

A major top-of-mind concern for enterprise customers who are migrating and running business-critical applications is cyberthreats. Ransomware, remote work vulnerabilities, cloud technology platform failures, data breaches-these risks can undermine any attempt to facilitate a safe and swift transition to the cloud.

NetApp and Google Cloud help customers explore a hybrid approach where data protection meets data security. We deliver data management, protection, and security to safeguard our customers' data-wherever it lives. We think about cyber resilience as a combination of data protection and data security with a comprehensive feature set, including:

  • Data protection:
  • Data availability-redundant everything combined with efficient data mirroring
  • Data recovery-fast, efficient granular backup and archiving on premises or in the cloud
  • Data security:
  • Threat detection-monitoring, detection, alerts, and prevention of known and newly discovered threats
  • Threat remediation-rapid response and recovery to minimize disruption
NetApp is also known for its on-premises data management capabilities. Can you tell us more about the future of on premises?

We recognize that 43% to 67% of customer workloads, according to the Uptime Institute, are still running on premises. This fact is widely known. If you're reading this blog post, you probably have firsthand experience with a hybrid architecture, and you understand some, if not all, of the mechanics of managing it.

We have confidence in our solutions. We believe in them, and in the engineers who have built them, the QA teams who test them, and the customers who use them. Yes, ONTAP takes the simplicity and flexibility of the cloud to the data center. It also brings all the enterprise capabilities of the data center to Google Cloud.

We have engineered ONTAP so that our customers can choose how and where they want to operate. They can also choose the degree to which they want to manage their environments, how many buttons and levers they want to push and pull.

Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud is based on proven ONTAP data management technology. It enables cloud storage as a service that offers all the scale, performance, availability, and manageability that ONTAP is known for. It's available in different formats to meet specific business requirements and allows selectable implementation of key data services. Those services range from data protection, to governance, to optimization, to security, among other features.

On premises or across the hybrid multicloud-it's all ONTAP. (So, it's all good.)
