With measures to drive more clean miles by switching to electric transport, utilizing renewable fuels, setting up more efficient routes, getting air out of packaging and deploying innovative means of transport such as the LEVV (light electric freight vehicles), PostNL is working to achieve significant CO₂ reductions.

At PostNL, sustainability is an integral part of the entire business process. When it comes to reducing carbon emissions, their logistics sector in particular has a significant impact.

PostNL is investing millions to make processes more sustainable as soon as possible with the ultimate goal of making virtually no more impact on the environment and climate. This is why they have set their goals with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In doing so, they are complying with the Paris Climate Agreement, says Suzanne Debrichy in the Sustainable Commerce video collection, which goes live today.

She has a background in commerce and IT, but quickly made the switch to sustainability at PostNL. 'PostNL started with an orientation back in 2007, you first have to have an understanding of your processes to take steps. We now have 90 percent CO₂ reduction as an ambition for 2040.'

PostNL wants to make cities more livable by redesigning last-mile delivery with smaller, electric vehicles. PostNL already regularly bundles shipments at a city hub to deliver to the recipient in one trip in a sustainable way. PostNL is also replacing fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives. Such as renewable diesel (HVO100).

'Making the vehicles cleaner is obvious, but we are also looking at using a reusable coffee cup at sorting centers.'

Debrichy believes there will soon be other return flows. 'Consumers will more often offer used items through marketplaces. We need to better support consumer-to-consumer traffic. Soon you will also more often offer appliances for repair. The idea New is better, we have to look at it differently.'
