Sports Desk, Sep 13 (EFE).- Lewis Hamilton on Sunday won a dramatic Tuscan Grand Prix that had to be restarted twice following red flag incidents.

Hamilton, who remains top of the championship standings, is now just one Grand Prix victory away from equalling Michael Schumacher's career record of 91.

Hamilton's Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas came in second and Red Bull's Alexander Albon made his first-ever podium place, coming in third after overtaking Renault's Daniel Ricciardo on lap 51. He is the first-ever Thai driver to make a Formula One podium.

Ricciardo finished fourth.

Racing Point's Sergio Perez came in fifth ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris, Alpha Tauri's Daniil Kvyat and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Alfa Romeo's Kimi Räikkönen and Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel completed the top 10. Vettel secured a point for Ferrari on its 100th F1 race.

Williams' George Russell and Haas driver Romain Grosjean in 11th and 12th.

Only 12 drivers completed the race at the Mugello Circuit, near Florence.

The race was dramatic from the off. Red Bull's Max Verstappen and last week's Italian Grand Prix winner, Alpha Tauri's Pierre Gasly, came off the track on the opening lap, prompting the safety car.

Then at the restart on lap 6 a huge shunt at the back of the pack resulted in a pile-up and a red flag.

McLaren's Carlos Sainz, Alfa Romeo's Antonio Giovinazzi, Haas driver Kevin Magnussen and Williams driver Nicholas Latifi had to retire after the crash.

"By the time I saw everything it was too late," Sainz said after the incident. "It was a big crash. The main thing is that we are all ok."

Renault's Esteban Ocon also had to come off the track due to overheating in his brakes.

The race got back underway with 50 laps to go.

On lap 44, Racing Point's Lance Stroll had a nasty crash following a puncture in his left tyre and the red flag was called again. He became the eighth driver to leave the race.

The next race on the Formula One calendar is the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi on 27 September. EFE
