Why are joggers called joggers?

Originally designed for exercise (hence the name), joggers are lightweight trousers with a tapered leg and a cuffed ankle. This makes them comfortable for moving around in, either for running or to throw on after exercise.

What's the difference between joggers and sweatpants?

Technically, while joggers have that tapered leg and cuffed ankle, sweatpants are baggier and unstructured. Classic sweatpants are often wide-legged, loose around the ankle and can be made from heavier material. But the two terms tend to be used interchangeably these days.

What are jogging bottoms made of?

The first pair of sweatpants was created by the founder of French brand Le Coq Sportif. They were knitted jersey trousers that gave athletes freedom of movement to run and stretch.

Still designed for comfort, joggers now tend to be made from cotton or a mixture of cotton and polyester to keep you snug and ensure the fabric doesn't pull.

Are joggers going out of style?

Far from it. Joggers were part of the unofficial uniform of 2020. A humble pair of baggy sweatpants were the ultimate in stay-at-home comfort. Not as form-fitting as leggings but just as comfortable, joggers became the go-to item of clothing during the pandemic. Fashionable, functional, cosy and flattering - they tick all the boxes.

As we move out of lockdown, a good pair of joggers should still have a place in your wardrobe.

Stick with a dressed-down, casual look, or be bold and dress up your joggers. Look for an elasticated waist with a drawstring so you can adjust your level of comfort. Choose between classic relaxed-fit joggers or a modern, slim-fit style - both leg shapes are on-trend for the new season.
