Meralco announced that electricity rates for a typical household went down this October by Php 0.1216 per kilowatthour (kWh) for its residential customers. Households consuming 200 kWh will experience a reduction of around Php 24 in their electricity bill. Meralco Public Information Office Head Joe Zaldarriaga (in photo) explained that the overall rate decrease was due to downward movements in both generation and transmission charges. He added that this is the third straight month of overall rate decreases. The rate decreases reaffirm a recent survey released by the International Energy Consultants, showing that Meralco's average rates (excluding VAT) have declined 28 percent since January 2012. Meralco customers were also able to save around Php 30 billion in power costs due to lower distribution charge, lower system loss and Meralco's sourcing strategy.
