Mastercard has launched a pilot program to verify digital identity without the need for multiple cards, with initial tests to begin at Deakin University and Australia Post

"Our increasingly digital life — the way we transact and interact — has challenged our traditional notions of identity, trust and privacy,"Ajay Bhalla, president of cyber and identity at Mastercard, said in a company release. "We need a new model.”

The pilot program will test a distributed model that includes information found on a mobile phone with verification from additional reference points like bank information or government agency data.

Deakin University has been using its pilot with students using identity verification technology for registration and digital exams at its Burwood and Geelong campuses in Victoria.

Additional pilots will be announced in other international markets.
