Elanco Animal Health received emergency authorizations from the Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency for screwworm treatments.
The animal health company said Monday it received emergency use authorization from the FDA for Negasunt Powder, as well as a Section 18 emergency exemption from the EPA for Tanidil to prevent and treat New World screwworm infestations across several livestock species.
The authorizations aim to give veterinarians and livestock producers a treatment option for various livestock species should New World screwworm flies enter the U.S. There have been confirmed cases of the screwworm detected as close as 62 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border, Elanco said.
Negasunt Powder and Tanidil will be available through the U.S. Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service and its National Veterinary Stockpile, and will be distributed in coordination with state animal health officials and federally recognized tribal agencies, the company said.
Tanidil's Section 18 emergency exemption is effective on April 27 and expires in 2029.
