Los Angeles County won't institute a threatened mask mandate, as a recent decline in metrics including new Covid-19 hospital admissions prompted officials to pull back from plans to make it the only major metro area in the country to impose such a rule as case counts have surged across the nation this summer.
Public health director Barbara Ferrer said two weeks ago that it was likely Los Angeles would begin requiring face coverings in restaurants, private and public schools, gyms and other public indoor spaces, because the county had entered what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention define as a high community level. While the CDC recommends individuals in high-ranked counties wear masks in indoor, public settings, Dr. Ferrer said she had hoped a mandate would boost compliance.
