SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) _ Agilent Technologies Inc. (A) on Thursday reported fiscal second-quarter earnings of $101 million.

On a per-share basis, the Santa Clara, California-based company said it had net income of 32 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 71 cents per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 58 cents per share.

The scientific instrument maker posted revenue of $1.24 billion in the period, which also topped Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.18 billion.

Agilent shares have fallen slightly more than 5% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has declined roughly 9%. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $80.75, a rise of 18% in the last 12 months.
