Amid the wave of Covid-19 in India, the BNP Paribas Rescue & Recover Fund takes action
  • 29.04.2021

In the past few days, India has been facing an explosion in the number of cases after the emergence of a new variant of the virus. This sharp increase quickly overwhelmed hospitals in this country of 1.3 billion people, resulting in the rapid saturation of its healthcare system, which now lacks the equipment and medicine to contain this deadly second wave. In the face of this very difficult health situation, BNP Paribas has decided to act.

In addition to providing direct aid via the French embassy's solidarity programme and support provided by the BNP Paribas India Foundation, the Group has decided to activate its Rescue & Recover Fund.

The Rescue & Recover Fund will match the total amount of all donations made to it. Each donation will make it possible to fund respiratory equipment for tens of thousands of patients being treated by the three partner NGOs working in the field.

A donation to the Rescue & Recover Fund campaign will go directly to helping out Covid-19 victims.
For each donation made, BNP Paribas will double the amount.

The action of partner NGOs on the ground
Red Cross

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Indian Red Cross has been providing care to patients and their families throughout the country. In order to be able to continue its operations, it needs to acquire 10- and 45-litre oxygen cylinders, ventilators, oxygen concentrators as well as medication, especially antivirals.

MSF (Doctors without borders)

MSF reactivated its emergency programme in Mumbai, the country's most populous city. In facilities where MSF is already working, teams have implemented screening, triage and infection control measures. New medical teams will staff two 1,000-bed intensive care units at the BKC Jumbo Hospital, in addition to medical and technical support in oxygen therapy. In the MEW district, MSF is providing prevention kits and telephone check-ups to high-risk patients and is stepping up its awareness-raising and hygiene access work.

CARE

CARE India aims to support over 10,000 severe cases of people infected with Covid-19 and requiring respiratory treatment. The teams on the ground are trying to relieve the healthcare infrastructure by creating hospitals and treatment centres specifically for Covid-19 patients. They are also expanding access to healthcare in neighbourhoods where cases are widespread but access to care is scarce. They are also raising awareness among the inhabitants of these neighbourhoods about the need to adopt barrier measures and observe basic preventive hygiene.

About the Rescue & Recover Fund

Launched in December 2012 by BNP Paribas, the Rescue & Recover Fund is an innovative device for collecting donations, which permits to react quickly and effectively in case of a humanitarian disaster. In addition, each time an employee makes a donation through the Fund, BNP Paribas doubles the amount. Since its creation, it has made it possible to pay more than 5 million euros to its NGOs partners CARE, French Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières).
