Capital One Financial : The Ohio State University Men’s Athletics Program and Stanford University Women Athletics Program Capture Historic Capital One® Cup Victories

The Buckeyes men and Cardinal women earn first and fourth respective Capital One Cup wins, setting records for their universities

McLEAN, Va. (July 6, 2017) - The race for the 2016-2017 Capital One® Cup draws to an exciting close today as the two winning athletics programs secure history-making victories. The Ohio State University men's athletics program and the Stanford University women's athletics program have finished first in the final standings, as announced today by Capital One (NYSE: COF), an official NCAA® Corporate Champion. The Buckeyes, who previously peaked at No. 3 in the men's standings, are setting a university record as first-time Capital One Cup winners, while this victory for the Cardinal marks its fourth Women's trophy - the most wins of any athletics program in Capital One Cup history.
Currently in its seventh year, the Capital One Cup recognizes NCAA Division I athletics programs for their cumulative on-field performance across multiple men's and women's sports. Since 2011, Capital One has contributed $2.8 million in student-athlete scholarships. In recognition of this outstanding achievement in 2017, the Ohio State men and Stanford women will receive a combined $400,000 in student-athlete scholarships and will be honored at The 25th ESPYS live on ABC Wednesday, July 12, at 8 p.m. ET from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
No stranger to the men's top 10, the Buckeyes' first-time road to No. 1 was paved with strong competition, as Stanford - the 2016 Men's Capital One Cup champion - maintained the lead in the fall and winter seasons. Creating a shift in the spring, the Buckeyes secured the national title in men's volleyball, followed by a top 10 finish in tennis. As the race began to heat up, it was the Buckeyes' run in men's lacrosse that ultimately sealed the deal. Earning an additional 36 Capital One Cup points from their second-place finish, the Buckeyes held off Florida and North Carolina to take the No. 1 spot.
The Stanford women captured the lead in the fall, and proved themselves unstoppable in pursuit of their record fourth Capital One Cup win. Achieving NCAA titles in women's volleyball, swimming and diving, and water polo, along with nine additional top-10 finishes, the Cardinal remained at the top of the women's standings throughout the fall, winter and spring seasons, earning an all-time record setting total of 175.5 Capital One Cup points. Coming in behind Stanford are two previous Capital One Cup winners - USC (No. 2), the 2016 Women's Capital One Cup champion, and Florida (No. 3), which took home the Women's Capital One Cup in 2014.

Highlights from the Capital One Cup during the 2016-2017 athletics season include:
From the spring season:

• Florida beat LSU 6-1in the Men's College World Series championship, marking the Gators' first national baseball title in school history.
• Oklahoma repeated as national champions in the Women's College World Series after defeating No. 1 Florida 5-4.
• Ohio State won its third men's volleyball title, securing a championship win over Brigham Young for the second-consecutive year.
• Stanford captured the women's water polo title with an 8-7 victory over UCLA, marking the team's sixth national championship win.
• Florida men's outdoor track and field clinched its second-consecutive national championship win, edging Texas by a close 2-point lead.
• Maryland men's and women's lacrosse each won a national championship; the women took home their 14th national title after an undefeated season, while the men earned their first title in 42 years.
• Virginia men's tennis wins third-consecutive NCAA championship, earning the program's fourth all-time NCAA title and fourth in the last five years.
• Washington earns its fourth national title in women's rowing, setting the record as the first program in NCAA Rowing Championship history to sweep all three grand finals.

From the fall and winter seasons:

• Clemson upset Alabama in the CFP National Championship, securing its second national title in team history and the first in more than 35 years.
• North Carolina men's basketball defeated Gonzaga to win its sixth national championship after falling short in the closing seconds of last year's title game.
• South Carolina won its first-ever women's basketball national championship, defeating Mississippi State 67-55, and ending UConn's four-year title run.
• Stanford women's swimming and diving clinched the national title, achieving a second-straight undefeated season.
• Oregon won its fourth women's cross country national title by a single point, becoming the lowest ranked team (12th) to ever win an NCAA national title in the sport.
• The Cal men won its fourteenth NCAA Water Polo Championship, the most water polo titles of any other collegiate athletic program.

• Delaware secured the program's first-ever women's national field hockey title after an impressive 3-2 win over North Carolina.

Last year, the Capital One Cup was awarded to the Stanford University men's athletics program and University of Southern California women's athletics program. This is the seventh year of the Capital One Cup.
