one of many scenes of flooding after torrential rainfall in the eastern U.S.

The downpours put more than 90 million people under high wind and flood advisories Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The roof on this building in Eastman, Georgia collapsed.

Parking lots were covered in water, vehicles partially submerged, and roads closed.

Authorities and local media reports said the storm was responsible for at least three deaths in Alabama, North Carolina and Georgia, where high winds and several tornadoes ripped through parts of the South.

Major cities including New York, Philadelphia and Boston were expected to see flood-inducing rains taper off in the morning and potentially damaging gusts of more than 50 miles per hour that could take down trees and power lines during the day.

Heavy rainfall drenched the streets of New York and the subway Tuesday.

Some 500,000 homes and businesses from Florida to Maine were without power early on Wednesday, according to Poweroutage.us.

The storm also caused more than 1,400 flight cancelations, according to Flightaware.com.
