In a Federal Register Notice published on May 1, 2024, the Department of State's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) announced a proposed rule to create an exemption in the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) to "support the goals of the AUKUS partnership, the enhanced trilateral security partnership among Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States."

The proposed rule will amend the ITAR to provide an exemption for license requirements or DDTC approval before the export, reexport, retransfer, or temporary import of defense articles or services to authorized users within Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Public comments on the proposed rule must be submitted to the Department of State by May 31, 2024.
