Gazprom Neft, together with the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor), has deployed augmented reality (AR) technologies in inspecting production facilities in Russia for the first time - AR solutions having made it possible to inspect capital construction facilities' compliance with environmental legislation and issue commissioning approvals remotely, and as quickly as possible.

This project on deploying AR technologies was implemented by specialists from Gazprom Neft's Procurement and Capital Construction Directorate and the Gazpromneft-Digital Solutions' VR and AR Technology Centre.

From their offices in Moscow and Orenburg Rosprirodnadzor representatives inspected new Gazprom Neft wells at the Yagodnoye field in the Orenburg Oblast remotely, with verification being undertaken - for the first time in Russia - using video broadcasting and AR tools. Based on the outcomes of this inspection, Rosprirodnadzor was able to issue its conclusion on these wells' compliance with environmental regulation, allowing the company to complete the assessment procedure and get clearance to commission the facilities.

This pilot experiment has confirmed the considerable effectiveness of AR technologies in managing the oversight and approval of newly constructed facilities remotely. Digital solutions improve quality standards and speed, as well as cutting operational costs -particularly on inspections in inaccessible and remote areas. Added to which, such technologies ensure speed and safety in assessing new production facilities under the constraints arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. Going forward, Rosprirodnadzor will be able to roll-out this solution in signing-off other newly constructed facilities in other regions throughout Russia.

«Digital technologies are gradually starting to cover every stage of capital construction projects. AR tools mean we can minimise the costs of visiting new facilities, while increasing approval speeds by 80%. The opportunity to use remote assessments increases safety for everyone involved - something that is particularly important during the current pandemic. The technological experiment we ran together with Rosprirodnadzor has proved highly effective. I have every confidence that rolling-out AR solutions will not only deliver further improvements in quality on Gazprom Neft's projects, but will also prove highly sought after throughout the oil and gas and related industries».

«Remote working in managing inspections will mean we can optimise costs - in terms of time and logistics - while significantly improving the efficiency of that process. This is an important step in terms of the transformational changes taking place at our company. This kind of inspection is even more pertinent under the pandemic: by minimising personal contacts we can commission facilities and implement new projects in a way that's safe for everyone involved».

«Using AR tools for overseeing compliance with environmental and ecological regulation will mean we can optimise the management of such activities significantly - something that is particularly pertinent for remote and inaccessible facilities - while also minimising the impacts of current COVID-19 restrictions. The management controls and audio-video recording capabilities built into the platform also increase transparency in everything we do, while offering further opportunities in later analysing the data we obtain, before coming to any final decision on a facility's regulatory compliance. This technology now offers considerable potential in managing oversight and supervisory activities remotely».
