Dollar General has tapped Ahold Delhaize veteran Jerry "JJ" Fleeman Jr. to succeed Todd Vasos as chief executive of the discount retailer, effective Jan. 1, 2027.
Dollar General on Tuesday said Fleeman, who has been CEO of Ahold Delhaize USA since April 2023, will also join the Goodlettsville, Tenn., company's board.
Fleeman, 52 years old, has spent more than 35 years with Ahold Delhaize, which owns several U.S. grocery chains, including Food Lion, Giant Food and Stop & Shop.
Vasos served as Dollar General's CEO from 2015 until handing the reins to Jeff Owen and retiring in 2022. He returned as CEO less than a year later after the company ousted Owen amid a slowdown in sales growth.
Dollar General said Vasos will serve as senior adviser through April 2, 2027, and will remain a member of the board.
Fleeman will receive an initial base salary of $1.25 million, a $500,000 cash signing bonus and an annual bonus with a target of 150% of his base pay.
Mr. Todd J. Vasos is an Independent Director at KeyCorp and a Chief Executive Officer & Director at Dollar General Corp. He is on the Board of Directors at KeyCorp, Dollar General Corp. and Retail Industry Leaders Association. Mr. Vasos was previously employed as a Chief Operating Officer & Executive Vice President by Longs Drug Stores Corp., a Vice President by Phar-Mor, Inc., and a Principal by Eckerd Drug, Inc. He received his undergraduate degree from Western Carolina University.
Dollar General Corporation specializes in reduced-price distribution of mass consumption products. Net sales break down by family of products as follows:
- consumption products (82%): hygiene and cleaning products (paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, etc.), food and beverage products, personal care and beauty products (soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, perfumes, cosmetics, etc.), OTC medications, and pet care products;
- seasonal products (10.1%): decorative items, toys, batteries, greeting cards, paper products, lawn and garden products, office supplies, etc.;
- household items (5.2%): kitchen items, small appliances, light bulbs, picture frames, candles, bathroom products, etc.;
- clothing and accessories (2.7%): clothing for men, women, and children, underwear, shoes, purses, etc.
At the end of January 2026, the group had a network of 20,893 stores located in the United States.
