Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk presented new analyses from the STEP UP Phase 3 trial at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO) in Istanbul. Data show that patients who responded early to treatment with a higher dose of Wegovy (semaglutide 7.2 mg) achieved an average weight loss of 27.7 percent after 72 weeks.

In the overall study, body weight decreased by an average of 20.7 percent for patients treated with semaglutide 7.2 mg, compared to 17.5 percent for the 2.4 mg dose and 2.4 percent for the placebo group.

The analysis also indicates that 84 percent of the weight loss with Wegovy was attributable to a reduction in fat mass, while muscle strength and function were preserved. Abdominal fat decreased by over 30 percent according to MRI data.

STEP UP included over 1,400 adults with obesity without type 2 diabetes and compared semaglutide 7.2 mg with 2.4 mg and placebo over 72 weeks. Novo Nordisk stated that the safety and tolerability profile for the 7.2 mg dose was consistent with that of the lower dose.
