Amgen is laying off about 350 U.S. employees of Horizon Therapeutics, the drugmaker that Amgen bought in a $27.8 billion deal that closed earlier this month.

Most of the cuts are for jobs that overlap with existing Amgen jobs, an Amgen spokeswoman tells Dow Jones Newswires.

Amgen is retaining more than 80% of Horizon's U.S. workforce, "reflecting the knowledge and capabilities we need to continue serving patients suffering from rare diseases," the spokeswoman said.

Horizon had a total workforce of 2,190 people as of June 30, according to regulatory filings.
