Commenting on Apple's quarterly earnings, CEO Tim Cook and CFO Luca Maestri reacted Thursday to the recently announced changes to the App Store in the European Union. According to both, the EU represents barely 7 percent of global sales.

Apple is not happy with those changes. For example, Apple must allow alternative app stores and sideloading, or installing apps outside the App Store. This does come with strict requirements. Apps have to be approved by Apple anyway, and from 1 million downloads, the company will start charging fees. These conditions only apply in the EU.

Apple says it is difficult to predict whether developers will opt for alternative app stores because they still want to be found in Apple's own environment. Apple has sharply reduced the commissions paid to developers who choose the official route.

Some companies, including Microsoft, Epic Games and Spotify, have called Apple's measures unacceptable.
